Ubiratan D'Ambrósio,
Honorary President |

Ubiratan D’Ambrosio was born in the city of Sao Paulo,
Brasil, on December the 8th, 1932. He graduated as a
Mathematics Teacher at the University of Sao Paulo in 1955.
He obtained his Doctorate in Mathematics at the San Carlos
School of Engineering of the University of Sao Paulo (1963)
and followed post-doctorate (research associate) studies in
the Math Department at Brown University in Providence,
Richmond, USA (1964/65).
He held a scholarship from the Italian Government at the
Math Institute of the University of Genoa (1960/61); was an
assistant professor at the Mathematics State University of
New York at Buffalo, USA (1965/66). |

At the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brasil,
he was an associate professor of math, director of the
Institute for Mathematics, Statistics and Communications
Sciences (1972/80), pro-president of University
Development (1982/90), and currently, professor
emeritus.
He was president and vice president of many societies
like, for instance: vice-president and president of the
International Committee of Math Education (1975/79);
vice-president of the International Study Group on
Ethnomathematics (1988/96) and president of the
Brazilian Society of Math History (1999/2003).
Since 1982 he has participated as a collaborating or
visiting professor of Postgraduate programs and Graduate
Programs in Education and Mathematics Education in
several institutions in Brasil and abroad. He has been a
member, as well, of many consultant and
technical-scientific councils, and of committees
including visitant consultant/professor of UNESCP in the
graduate program of the pedagogic center of Bamako,
Republic of Mali (1971/80/). Currently, he is the
president of UVLA/ Latin American Virtual University. He
has published dozens of books and articles in
specialized journals. He has received the following
distinctions:

“Fellow” by the American Association for the Advancement
of Sciences (AAAS) with the title: For imaginative and
effective leadership in Latin American Mathematics
Education and in efforts towards international
cooperation” in 1983.

Order to the Merit:” Burity” given by the government of
the federal district.
· Elected
“Correspondent Scholar” by the National Academy of
Exact, physic and Natural Sciences of Argentina (1991).
·
Honorary President of the Brazilian Society of the
History of Science (1989).
·
Honorary associate of the Uruguayan Society of Math
Education (SEMUR)
·
Award UNIPAZ 1977 “in acknowledgement for his
contribution to the culture of peace” during the
International Holistic and Transpersonal Congress in
Aguas de Lindoia, Sao Paulo (Sept.7th, 1997).

ICMI 2005 AWARDS -
The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction
(ICMI) of the International Mathematical Union has
announced recipients of its 2005 awards. Felix Klein
Medal - The second Felix Klein Medal of ICMI is
awarded to Professor Ubiratan D’Ambrosio, Brasil. This
distinction acknowledges the role Ubiratan D’Ambrosio
has played in the development of mathematics education
as a field of research and development throughout the
world, above all in Latin America. It also recognises
Ubiratan D’Ambrosio’s pioneering role in the development
of research perspectives which are sensitive to the
characteristics of social, cultural, and historical
contexts in which the teaching and learning of
mathematics take place, as well as his insistence on
providing quality mathematics education to all, not just
to a privileged segment of society. His role in
promoting mathematics education research and development
in Latin America, both as regards priorities and content
and as regards institutional and organisational
frameworks, can hardly be over-estimated. His focus on
providing graduate and postgraduate programmes for young
researchers exemplifies his contribution.

the computer simulation in Virtual Reality, Serious Games,
Strategy, Medical Images, Geophysics, Aerospace and Innovation.
His Contribution extends to the Dissemination of Scientifics
projects, governmental and private funding, social projects in
Brazil and abroad. One of the early users of free software and
open source as a
Methodology
for the teaching and learning
in Math and Science.
He began his career as professor of mathematics and physical
sciences in public and private schools. As a guest, joined the
teaching in preparatory courses before universities, and
superior education. He worked as a teacher, coordinator and
director of elementary schools, middle and upper. He was founder
and owner of Mario Schemberg School, Granja Viana, Cotia, São
Paulo. In parallel, he served as Director of Technology in
Teaching and Learning at the Union of Education Private
Institutions in the State of São Paulo. After that, he was
invited to direct this same program of Applied Technology in
Education for the FAEPLA - Federación de Asociaciones Educativas
Privadas de América Latina y el Caribe. Continuing his career,
was asked to develop a similar program as a Executive Vice
President in a multinational company in the UK, with a System of
Learning and Transfer of Technology for projects over of 50
countries. Then he has revitalized your resume to make
consulting in Strategic Studies and Projects in Technology and
Learning with Computer Simulation who still running till today.

Tania Fraga is a
Brazilian architect and artist. She holds a PhD. on the
Communication and Semiotics Program at the Catholic University
of Sao Paulo (PUC). In the course of 1999, Tania developed a
Post Doctoral research project at CAiiA-STAR, UK with a research
grant from CAPES, the Brazilian Agency for the Improvement of
Higher Education Personnel. She was Professor and Co-ordinator
of the Graduation Studies of the Art Institute at University of
Brasilia, Brazil, where she is Associated Researcher. She was
member of the Advisory Research Committee of the Banff New Media
Centre in 2003, Canada. She was Visiting Scholar at the Computer
Science Department at The George Washington University,
Washington DC, 1991/1992 and Artist-in-Residence at The Bemis
Foundation, USA, 1986, with a grant from the Fulbrigth
Commission.
She has been showing and publishing her work in many national
and international exhibitions, lectures, workshops, seminars and
congresses.
Tania's current field of research is the creation of interactive
cyber-worlds, for interactive stage performances and interactive
art installations. They are based on 3D modelling, animation and
VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language), JavaScript and Java
3D languages.He has published nationally and internationally and
participated in exhibitions and shows in Brazil, Germany,
Australia, United States, France, Britain, Italy, Russia,
Switzerland, Norway and Hong Kong. Residence on new technologies
in education at the Institute of Education, University of
London. She developed post-doctoral project in computer
interactive arts at the Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the
Interactive Arts, Technology and Art Research in Newport,
Plymouth, UK.
Currently developing a post doctoral studies at ECA - USP - SP.
A doctor in communication and semiotics from the Pontifícia
Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC/SP). She served as a
professor with the Arts Institute of the Universidade de
Brasília (UnB), where she works as an associate researcher. She
has worked with interactive computational art since 1987, using
virtual-reality technologies. |
