Donizetti Louro is President of IMA - Institute of Mathematics and the Art of Sao Paulo. Professor and Researcher at Catholic University of São Paulo in the Department of Computer Science. His research is concerned with Designing Immersive Environments and Developing solutions for Instructional Design using knowledge of human-computer-interaction. It specializes in the area of Virtual Immersive Environments, Artificial Intelligence for Technical Images. Bachelor in Mathematics, Bachelor in Sciences and Postgraduate in Education. Member of the Research Group on Social and Affective Computing at Institute for Aerospace Technology - ITA.  Collaborator Researcher of the education school at University of Western Ontario, Canada. Topics of interest: Psychophysics, Computer Graphics, 3d Effects and Learning Theories.

 

Since IMA’s foundation, 18 years ago, he has successfully translated user-centered research into interfaces for a wide range of products over 50 countries. Also, he has spent over two decades designing projects witch have helped interchanges educational and professional, focus on standards-driven sound science, technology for education and decision-making. Louro has made conferences about “Digital Media - Education and Entertainment for Children”, “How Can We Make School Making Sense in the Digital Age”, “Interactive Design for Computer Arts at Games and Cinema”, "How can we improve Mathematics teaching through Immersive Environments".

 

These works means to extract the key benefits of its technology and construct plausible usage scenarios. Louro went, with this team, on to define and design a Java 3D/VRML application simulation — incorporating realistic functionality and a viable user interface — which 3D show event. Before that time, his work included new educational equipments systems for Schools and Universities, an interactive showroom for HP and workshops for all Latin America and Caribbean. Louro joined SIEEESP (the biggest Private Schools Owners Syndicate of South America, more than 30.000 schools in Brazil) as well, after more than six years as a Director of Educational Development working on Media and Education, Internet and Web Projects. As Director, Louro had worked in close partnership with lots of Institutions of Education in Latin America and Caribbean beyond his responsibilities as a board member of Comep - Confederación Mundial de Enseñanza Privada. Since 1987 as leader of Educational Technology and his senior executive team, are responsible for the release of development of the “Education Through Technological, Materials and Didactic Equipments”.

The Digital Mathematical Performance Project

 

DMP is funded through a grant the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada . Performance takes place in the theatre, at poetry readings and on the screen. What if as mathematicians, as math educators, or as students of mathematics we moved outside of the domain of assessment (where performance takes on a different meaning) and used an artistic lens to look at how we ‘perform’ mathematics? If we view mathematics (doing, teaching, learning) as embodied performance, what do we see differently?

As Educational Interaction Designer, Louro conduct a user study to investigate how students deal with the flow of information in their class-spaces. The design includes direct manipulation techniques and support for browsing; goes beyond physical world functionality by immersive virtual education providing system assistance for automatic learning and entertainments. Preliminary user tests indicate that the design is promising and raises issues that will be addressed in future education.

Under Louro’s leadership, he is embarking on a new development course of on-line standards-driven curriculum, assessment, and instructional management at a pace only years of dedicated experience could direct. Louro passionately believe educators and other professionals are increasingly seeking comprehensive, district-wide solutions in response to the standards movement, which require the schools, companies and communities to ensure that learning activities and assessments are aligned to Brazilian and international standards.
